About Heather Hill Gardens

Heather Hill Gardens on Route 123Heather Hill Gardens has been in operation since 1992 when the owners moved into the Victorian house on the property. Over the years, the circa 1900 house has seen the addition of a tower and a greenhouse.

The grounds of Heather Hill Gardens feature three acres of Virginia native plants and have evolved to include sun gardens, shade gardens, and challenge gardens. Employing primarily organic techniques, the owners avoid using chemicals whenever possible.

Bonnie Ruetenik, Owner, Heather Hill GardensBonnie came to gardening quite naturally. Her father owns and operates a Christmas tree farm and her mother raised and cultivated orchids. Starting early in the family business, Bonnie's high school and college jobs were all in nurseries. After earning a B.S. in horticulture, she continued to train and hone her gardening skills, culminating in the opening of Heather Hill Gardens.

The staff at Heather Hill Gardens boasts years of gardening experience. They have broad knowledge of:

  • Container gardening
  • Flower gardening
  • Herb gardening
  • Plants suitable for Northern Virginia
  • Deer-resistant planting strategies
  • Landscaping advice
